Friends, family, and even acquaintances. Everyone has relationships. We as people need them, because nobody wants to be alone all the time. In a book titled “Cress” by Marissa Meyer, the main character, Cress, is a genius programer living in her satellite. Alone in outer space with a view of Earth, and the Moon from far far away. Cress has nobody to live with except her master, Sybil, that comes to check up on her every once in awhile. The problem is neither of them even care about each other, and sometimes it is better to be alone than pulling your hair out in an unhealthy relationship.
In Cress’s earlier years in the satellite, she made a program that she could communicate with. She never knew when Sybil would come back, or if she would ever be free for her satellite prison cell. Now many years later, she still isn’t free, and a program is just not enough of a relationship for her. Sybil still comes for visits, and treats Cress like scum on her shoe when she does. Cress always feels better when Sybil leaves, because her relationship with Sybil is not beneficial for her. She would rather be alone for who knows how long in space then take the criticism Sybil gives her. Still she was trapped with Earth so close, she could almost touch it.
Not everything is about you, but you have to think about how you are feeling about a situation sometimes. If you feel uncomfortable or if you feel like you are the only person who is doing anything for the other person, you should listen to yourself. Cress was always doing the programming and Sybil taking the credit. Give the same excuse every time Cress tried to rebel against her. That she saved her life by letting her get this job. Sadly that wasn't enough to have a fair relationship. Many people are clouded by the fact that they even have a relationship. Ignoring the fact that it is not beneficial, because of the fear of being alone.
To conclude, sometimes in life, we make toxic relationships. Both voluntarily and involuntarily. Cress had an involuntary relationship. She had to work with Sybil, because Sybil was her boss. Other relationships like friends are voluntary, because you choose to be around those people unlike acquaintances or family. Cress would rather be alone, but she on the other hand, didn’t have a choice. you have a choice between being alone or stay in an aggravating relationship.
